Project work!
We are working with the ipads this week researching information on two ancient civilisations - The Aztecs and The Egyptians. We are going to be so knowledgeable about these historic people by the time we are finished. We are making some group projects to put on display too!
Science Week has started and we have various activities each day in 6th class. Have a look and see what we have been up to.....
Day 1: We discovered how rockets work by doing an experiment in class with a film canister, water and a berroca tablet. We stuck a berroca tablet to the lid of the film canister and put some water into the bottom of the canister. We put the lid on. Some brave girls turned the canister upside down while we waited to see what would happen...
An acid and a base mix to form carbon dioxide which are the bubbles that you see. When enough carbon dioxide has been produced the pressure builds until the container can no longer hold it at which point the top pops off and the gas and liquid explode out!

Day 2: We looked at runner bean seeds today using magnifying glasses to find the parts of the runner bean inside. We also have created an experiment to see what seeds need to germinate. We have planted seeds in 4 jars. Each jar has a different content. One has shredded paper, one has thumb tacks, one has soil and one has pencil parings. They each have the same amount of contents and the same amount of water. Two seeds were placed in each container. This makes it all a fair test. What will happen? We have written our predictions. We will record our findings over the next 10 days and report on what has happened.
Day 3: Today we tried an experiment using diet coke and mentos.
We opened bottles of diet coke and added mentos mints into the bottles. As the mentos sink in the bottle, they cause the production of more and more carbon dioxide bubbles, and the rising bubbles react with carbon dioxide that is still dissolved in the diet coke to cause more carbon dioxide to be freed and create even more bubbles, resulting in an eruption. This was great fun!

Day 4: Today we checked our seeds in our pots to see how they were progressing. No change in three pots but in the pot that contained the soil the seeds had germinated. We also were testing our heart rate and finding out about our pulse!
Day 5: Today we discussed electricity and we had a chance to work with batteries, bulbs, tinfoil and wires. Our first task was to make a bulb light up using a battery and tinfoil. We did it! We then started making simple circuits using wires instead of tinfoil. We will continue our investigation into electricity next week. Science week has been great fun!

History Field Trip
On Friday 27th September we set off for Drogheda. Our local town is steeped in history and we were lucky to get a chance to learn about some of the history of Drogheda. We started at St. Peter's Church on West St. where we learned about the Tholsel and about the many churches in Drogheda. After that we headed up Lawrence's Street to see the very famous Lawrences Gate where we found out about Oliver Cromwell and how the gates and walls were built to protect the town. We walked up Palace St. where we saw the original Bishop's palace and then walked towards St. Peter's church. We were treated to some spooky stories in the graveyard there including a great story about a famous wealthy Drogheda woman called Annie Harmon. We also got to see the very special Cadaver graves. There were two in this graveyard and there are only nine in the whole of Ireland so we were delighted to be able to see them. Next we went to St. Peter's church where we learned about St. Oliver Plunkett and we went into the church to see his relic. Along our walk we also got to see the Highlanes Gallery where we saw King William of Orange's sword from the Battle of the Boyne.
We finished our History Trip with a visit to Mellifont Abbey where we followed maps to find where the various points of interest were. We had our picnic there too before getting back on the bus and heading back to school. What a great day! Have a look at our photos of our trip...
Brilliant Basketball!
Basketball with Coach Ciarán has started and the girls are delighted! They are building on the skills they have learned previously and are putting in a great effort. Well done girls!
Super Scientists!
6th Class girls enjoyed a Science lesson on Magnetism this week. They learned about magnetic fields and about the properties of magnets. All girls had a chance to figure out exactly how magnets work by trying out various science activities involving magnets. They also had to see if they could make a paper clip chain using a magnet and some girls did a fantastic job!
